Tzatziki, a refreshing Greek yogurt and cucumber dip.

Posted on April 27, 2026 by Admin

Tzatziki is a classic cold sauce or dip from Greece made with strained yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, lemon (or vinegar), and fresh herbs like dill or mint. It’s known for being cool, tangy, and very refreshing—commonly served with grilled meats, pita bread, or as part of mezze spreads.

What makes it special

The key to tzatziki is contrast: creamy yogurt meets crisp cucumber and sharp garlic, balanced with citrus and herbs. It’s light but flavorful, and it also works well as a cooling side with spicy or rich foods.

Simple homemade tzatziki

Here’s an easy version you can make at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup thick Greek yogurt (or strained yogurt)
  • 1 small cucumber (grated or finely diced)
  • 1–2 cloves garlic (minced or crushed)
  • 1–2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice or white vinegar
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: dill or mint (fresh, chopped)

Method:

  1. Grate the cucumber and squeeze out excess water (important so it doesn’t become watery).
  2. Mix yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice in a bowl.
  3. Add salt and herbs if using.
  4. Chill for at least 20–30 minutes before serving for best flavor.

How it’s used

  • Served with grilled meats like souvlaki or kebabs
  • Used as a dip for pita bread or vegetables
  • Added to wraps and gyros as a cooling sauce

If you want, I can also show you a restaurant-style version, a low-calorie version, or how to pair it with specific dishes.
