Your mattress has more germs than you think. Here are 7 tips for cleaning it

It’s true — your mattress can collect sweat, dead skin cells, dust mites, and bacteria over time. The good news? You can deep-clean it without fancy equipment.

Here are 7 effective mattress-cleaning tips 🛏️✨


1️⃣ Strip and Wash Everything

Remove sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers.
Wash in hot water (130°F / 54°C if fabric allows) to kill dust mites.


2️⃣ Vacuum Thoroughly

Use an upholstery attachment and go slowly.
Focus on:

  • Seams
  • Tufting
  • Edges

This removes dust, hair, and allergens.


3️⃣ Spot Clean Stains (The Right Way)

For sweat or urine stains:

  • Mix hydrogen peroxide + a drop of dish soap + baking soda
  • Lightly spray (don’t soak)
  • Blot, don’t rub

For fresh spills:
Blot immediately with a clean towel before applying any cleaner.


4️⃣ Deodorize with Baking Soda

Sprinkle a generous layer over the entire surface.
Let sit at least 1–4 hours (longer = better).
Vacuum thoroughly.

This absorbs moisture and odors.


5️⃣ Disinfect (Without Soaking)

Lightly mist with:

  • 70% isopropyl alcohol spray
    OR
  • A fabric-safe disinfectant spray

Let it air dry completely. Avoid over-wetting — moisture can cause mold.


6️⃣ Air It Out

If possible:

  • Open windows
  • Use fans
  • Let sunlight hit the mattress

UV light naturally reduces bacteria and odors.


7️⃣ Protect It Going Forward

Use a zippered waterproof mattress protector.
Rotate your mattress every 3–6 months to prevent uneven wear.

  • Deodorize: every 3–6 months
  • Deep clean: every 6 months
  • Replace mattress: every 7–10 years
