Shepherd’s pie is classic comfort food—savory minced meat in a rich gravy topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden.
Here’s a solid, traditional version you can make at home:
Shepherd’s Pie (Classic Recipe)
Ingredients
For the filling
- 500 g minced lamb (traditional) or beef
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1–2 carrots (diced)
- 1/2 cup peas
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1 cup broth (beef or chicken)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper
- 1 tsp thyme or mixed herbs
- 2 tbsp oil or butter
For the mashed topping
- 3–4 potatoes (boiled)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup milk
- Salt to taste
Instructions
1. Make the mashed potatoes
- Boil potatoes until soft
- Mash with butter, milk, and salt
- Set aside
2. Cook the filling
- Heat oil in a pan
- Sauté onion + garlic until soft
- Add minced meat and cook until browned
- Stir in carrots and cook 3–4 minutes
- Add tomato paste and flour → cook 1 minute
- Pour in broth + Worcestershire sauce
- Add peas, salt, pepper, herbs
- Simmer until thick and rich (about 8–10 minutes)
3. Assemble
- Spread meat mixture in a baking dish
- Top with mashed potatoes (spread evenly)
- Use a fork to create texture on top (helps browning)
4. Bake
- Oven: 200°C (400°F)
- Bake 20–25 minutes until golden on top
- Optional: broil/grill for extra crisp
Tips
- True shepherd’s pie uses lamb; with beef it’s technically “cottage pie”
- Add cheese to the mash for a richer topping
- A pinch of chili flakes gives a nice kick
- Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving so it sets properly
