Salisbury steak is a classic comfort dish made from seasoned ground beef patties served with a rich, savory mushroom gravy. Think of it as “elevated hamburger steak”—tender, juicy, and packed with flavor.

Steak patties

  • 500g ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1 small onion, finely grated or minced

1. Form the patties

  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and seasoning.
  • Shape into oval patties (slightly thicker than burgers).

2. Brown the steaks

  • Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
  • Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned.
  • Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

3. Cook mushrooms

  • In the same pan, add butter.
  • SautĂ© mushrooms and onions until golden and soft (5–7 minutes).

4. Make the gravy

  • Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir for 1–2 minutes.
  • Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer until slightly thickened.

5. Finish cooking steaks

  • Return patties to the pan.
  • Spoon gravy over them.
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through and tender.

  • Over mashed potatoes 🥔
  • With rice 🍚
  • Or buttered noodles 🍝
  • Spoon extra mushroom gravy on top
