cheesy potato cake

Posted on April 21, 2026 by Admin

A cheesy potato cake is a savory, baked (or pan-cooked) dish made from mashed or grated potatoes mixed with cheese and seasonings, then set into a firm “cake” that can be sliced like a pie. It’s crispy on the outside, soft and cheesy inside—comfort food at its best.

Here’s a simple homemade version:

🧀 Cheesy Potato Cake

🧾 Ingredients

  • 4–5 medium potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
  • 1 egg (optional, helps binding)
  • 2 tbsp cornflour or all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2–3 tbsp milk (as needed for texture)
  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp chili flakes (optional)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder or 1 minced garlic clove
  • Chopped parsley or coriander (optional)

👩‍🍳 Method

1. Prepare the potato mixture

  • Mash boiled potatoes until smooth (no lumps).
  • Add butter, salt, pepper, garlic, and chili flakes.
  • Mix in cheese (keep some for topping).
  • Add cornflour and egg to help bind everything.
  • If mixture feels dry, add a little milk.

2. Shape the cake

  • Grease a pan or baking dish.
  • Press the potato mixture firmly into an even layer (about 1–1.5 inch thick).
  • Smooth the top and sprinkle extra cheese on top.

3. Cook it

🔥 Oven method (best result)

  • Bake at 200°C (390°F) for 20–25 minutes
  • Then broil/grill for 2–3 minutes for a golden crust

🍳 Pan method (no oven)

  • Cook on low heat in a covered non-stick pan
  • Flip carefully after bottom is golden (like a thick potato pancake)
  • Cook both sides until crisp

4. Serve

  • Let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing
  • Cut into wedges like a cake
  • Serve with ketchup, garlic mayo, or chili sauce

🧠 Tips for perfect cheesy potato cake

  • Use starchy potatoes for better texture (they hold together well).
  • Don’t skip pressing the mixture firmly—it helps it slice cleanly.
  • Add mozzarella for stretch and cheddar for flavor.
  • You can mix in extras like corn, chicken bits, or jalapeños.

If you want, I can also make:

  • A crispy fried cheesy potato cake (street-style)
  • A ramen-style cheesy potato cake with egg crust
  • Or a healthy air-fryer version with less oil
