hamburger steaks smothered in onion gravy

Posted on April 21, 2026 by Admin

Hamburger steaks smothered in onion gravy is a classic comfort dish: juicy seasoned beef patties pan-seared, then simmered in a rich, savory onion gravy until tender and flavorful. It’s like a steakhouse-style meal made at home with simple ingredients.

🍽️ 🍖 Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

🧾 Ingredients

For the hamburger steaks

  • 500g ground beef (preferably 15–20% fat for juiciness)
  • 1 small onion (finely grated or minced)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (or 2 minced garlic cloves)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional but recommended)

For the onion gravy

  • 2 large onions (sliced thin)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (or chicken broth in a pinch)
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (adds depth)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Method

1. Make the patties

  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Form into oval or round patties (like mini steaks).

2. Sear the steaks

  • Heat a pan with a little oil.
  • Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned.
  • Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

3. Make the onion gravy

  • In the same pan, add butter and sliced onions.
  • Cook slowly on medium-low heat until golden and caramelized (10–15 minutes).
  • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes.
  • Gradually add broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
  • Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer until slightly thickened.

4. Smother & simmer

  • Return hamburger steaks to the pan.
  • Spoon gravy over them.
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.

🍽️ Serve with:

  • Mashed potatoes 🥔
  • Steamed rice 🍚
  • Buttered noodles 🍝
  • Crusty bread 🍞

🧠 Tips for best flavor

  • Cook onions slowly—this is where the gravy gets its deep flavor.
  • Don’t skip resting the patties in gravy; it makes them extra juicy.
  • A splash of Worcestershire or soy sauce adds “steakhouse” depth.
  • If gravy gets too thick, add a little water or broth.

If you want, I can also make:

  • A Southern-style hamburger steak recipe with brown gravy
  • A creamy mushroom onion gravy version
  • Or a quick 20-minute weeknight version
