homemade herbicide

Posted on April 22, 2026 by Admin

A homemade herbicide is a DIY mixture used to kill unwanted weeds using common household ingredients. Some work for light surface weeds, but they are usually non-selective (they can damage any plant they touch).

⚠️ Important safety note

Homemade herbicides:

  • Do not target only weeds (they can kill garden plants too)
  • May require repeated use
  • Are best for paths, cracks, driveways, not lawns or crops

🧪 Common homemade herbicide recipes

🧂 1. Vinegar + salt + dish soap

  • 1 liter white vinegar
  • 2–3 tablespoons salt
  • A few drops dish soap

✔ Vinegar burns leaves
✔ Salt dries out plants
✔ Soap helps it stick

👉 Best for: pavement cracks, driveways

🍋 2. Vinegar-only spray

  • Plain white vinegar in a spray bottle

✔ Good for young weeds
⚠️ Weaker than chemical herbicides

💧 3. Boiling water

  • Pour directly onto weeds

✔ Instant effect on small weeds
✔ Very cheap and safe (no chemicals)

🧴 4. Rubbing alcohol spray

  • 1 part alcohol + 2 parts water

✔ Dries out plant tissues
⚠️ Use carefully—can harm nearby plants

🌱 What works best

  • Small, young weeds → vinegar or boiling water
  • Tough weeds → may need repeated treatment
  • Deep-rooted weeds → often require pulling or professional herbicide

🚩 Limitations

  • Not as strong as commercial herbicides
  • No long-term soil control (weeds may regrow)
  • Salt-based mixes can damage soil if overused

🧠 Simple summary

Homemade herbicides are cheap, quick fixes for small weeds, especially on hard surfaces—but they are not a permanent or selective solution.
