Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lbs ground beef (80/20 is perfect)
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup crushed saltine crackers (or breadcrumbs)
  • 1 small onion, finely minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder

Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    In a bowl, mix beef, milk, crackers, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and garlic powder just until combined.
    Shape into oval or round patties (about ½-inch thick).
  2. Brown the steaks
    Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
    Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
  3. Cook the onions
    In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden (about 8–10 minutes).
  4. Make the gravy
    Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
    Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Simmer everything together
    Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Cover and simmer on low 20–25 minutes, until tender and cooked through.
  6. Serve hot
    Spoon plenty of onion gravy over the top 😌
