Amish Poor Man’s Steak

Posted on January 26, 2026 by Admin

Ahhh, Amish Poor Man’s Steak—total comfort-food classic 😌
It’s basically a humble, cozy baked beef dish that eats like steak without the steak price tag.

🥩 Amish Poor Man’s Steak (Classic Version)

Ingredients

  • 1½–2 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed saltines
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (optional but recommended)
  • 2 cups beef broth or water
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup (very traditional)

Optional additions

  • Worcestershire sauce (1–2 tsp)
  • Paprika
  • Sliced mushrooms

👩‍🍳 How to Make It

  1. Mix the meat
In a bowl, combine ground beef, milk, breadcrumbs, onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently—don’t overwork it.
  2. Shape it
Press the mixture into a greased baking dish (9×13 works well). Score it into serving-sized “steaks.”
  3. Make the gravy
Whisk together the beef broth and cream of mushroom soup. Pour over the meat.
  4. Bake
Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1–1¼ hours.
  5. Uncover & finish
Remove foil for the last 10–15 minutes if you want a little browning.

🍽️ How It’s Usually Served

  • Mashed potatoes (mandatory IMO)
  • Buttered egg noodles
  • Green beans or corn
  • Homemade bread if you’re really leaning into the Amish vibe

💡 Tips

  • The longer it bakes, the more tender it gets
  • Leftovers are even better the next day
  • You can swap cream of mushroom for cream of chicken if needed

If you want, I can give you:

  • a slow cooker version
  • a no-soup from-scratch gravy
  • or a lighter / modernized take

Just say the word 👀
