That’s mold (or mildew) — super common on leather that’s been stored for months, especially over winter.
What’s happening
- Leather is organic (it’s skin), so mold loves it
- Stored in a dark, slightly damp place = perfect conditions
- The white fuzzy patches are mold spores growing on the surface
Good news: if you caught it early, it’s usually fixable 👍
What to do right now (safe + effective)
1️⃣ Take them outside
Don’t clean mold indoors if you can — avoid spreading spores.
2️⃣ Dry them thoroughly
- Leave in fresh air, shade (not direct sun) for a few hours
- Stuff with paper to absorb moisture
3️⃣ Kill the mold
Choose one method:
Option A: Vinegar (very effective)
- Mix equal parts white vinegar + water
- Lightly dampen a cloth (don’t soak)
- Wipe moldy areas
- Let air-dry completely
Option B: Rubbing alcohol
- 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cloth
- Wipe gently
- Air-dry
4️⃣ Clean & condition
- Once dry, use leather conditioner to restore oils
- This helps prevent future mold
What NOT to do
❌ Don’t use bleach (damages leather)
❌ Don’t soak the shoes
❌ Don’t use a hair dryer or heater
How to prevent it next time
- Store shoes clean and dry
- Use silica gel packets or cedar shoe trees
- Avoid plastic bags — use breathable fabric bags
- Keep them out of damp basements or closets
If you want, tell me:
- smooth leather or suede?
- expensive or sentimental pair?
I can tailor the cleaning method so you don’t damage them 👟✨
