Nail lines

Posted on April 24, 2026 by Admin

Nail lines are changes in the surface or color of your fingernails or toenails. Most of them are harmless, but some can signal health issues depending on their type, color, and pattern.

Here are the main kinds:

➖ 1. Vertical lines (long ridges)

  • Run from cuticle to tip
  • Very common with age
  • Usually harmless

Causes:

  • Normal aging
  • Dry nails
  • Mild nutrient deficiencies (sometimes iron or B vitamins)
  • Frequent nail trauma or harsh chemicals

👉 If mild and gradual, it’s usually not a concern.

➖ 2. Horizontal lines (Beau’s lines)

  • Deep grooves going across the nail
  • More medically significant than vertical lines

Possible causes:

  • Severe illness or high fever
  • Major stress on the body
  • Diabetes complications
  • Chemotherapy or strong medications
  • Injury to the nail matrix

👉 These often appear after the event and grow out slowly.

⚫ 3. Dark or black lines

  • Thin dark streak under the nail

Possible causes:

  • Injury (blood under nail)
  • Fungal infection (sometimes)
  • Rarely, melanoma (skin cancer)

🚩 Needs medical attention if:

  • It is new, widening, or irregular
  • It doesn’t grow out with the nail
  • It affects only one nail without injury

⚪ 4. White lines or spots

  • Small white marks or streaks

Usually caused by:

  • Minor trauma (very common)
  • Not calcium deficiency (a common myth)
  • Sometimes zinc deficiency (rare)

🧠 When to worry

See a doctor if:

  • Lines appear suddenly and persist
  • Nails become thick, painful, or deformed
  • You notice dark streaks without injury
  • Multiple nails change rapidly

💡 Simple care tips

  • Keep nails moisturized (oil or hand cream)
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and excessive cleaning agents
  • Eat a balanced diet with protein, iron, and vitamins
  • Protect nails from repeated trauma
