Washboard cookies

🍪 Washboard cookies

Washboard cookies are simple, old-fashioned cookies with a ridged “washboard” pattern pressed into the dough before baking. They’re slightly crisp on the edges, soft inside, and usually mildly sweet—perfect with tea.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt

👩‍🍳 Method

1. Cream butter & sugar

  • Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

2. Add wet ingredients

  • Mix in egg and vanilla until smooth.

3. Add dry ingredients

  • Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Mix until a soft dough forms.

4. Shape & pattern

  • Roll dough into small balls.
  • Place on baking tray and flatten slightly.
  • Use a fork (or comb-like tool) to press lines across the top to create the “washboard” look.

5. Bake

  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10–12 minutes
  • Edges should be lightly golden

🍽️ Serving ideas

  • With tea or coffee ☕
  • Dipped in chocolate 🍫
  • With jam or butter spread

💡 Tips

  • Don’t overbake—keep centers soft
  • Chill dough if it’s too sticky
  • Press patterns gently so cookies don’t crack

⚡ Quick 3-step version

  • Make dough
  • Press pattern
  • Bake

If you want, I can show you a chocolate washboard cookie version, a spiced cinnamon version, or a 3-ingredient ultra-simple version.
