🥖🧀 Philly Cheesesteak (Classic Sandwich)

A Philly cheesesteak is a hot, melty sandwich from Philadelphia made with thinly sliced beef, onions, and gooey cheese on a soft hoagie roll. Simple ingredients, big flavor.

🧾 Ingredients (2 sandwiches)

  • 2 hoagie rolls (or soft sub rolls)
  • 300–400g ribeye steak (thinly sliced)
(or any tender beef, sliced very thin)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional but common)
  • 4–6 slices provolone cheese
(or American cheese / Cheez Whiz for authentic street style)
  • 1–2 tbsp oil or butter
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prep the beef

  • Freeze the steak for 20–30 minutes so it’s easier to slice thinly.
  • Slice it as thin as possible against the grain.
  • Season lightly with salt and pepper.

2. Cook the vegetables

  • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  • Add a little oil or butter.
  • SautĂ© onions (and peppers if using) until soft and slightly caramelized.
  • Remove and set aside.

3. Cook the beef

  • In the same pan, add sliced beef.
  • Cook quickly (2–4 minutes), chopping it with a spatula as it cooks.
  • Keep it juicy—don’t overcook.

4. Combine & melt cheese

  • Mix onions back into the beef.
  • Lay cheese slices on top.
  • Cover the pan for 1–2 minutes so the cheese melts into the meat.

5. Assemble the sandwich

  • Toast the hoagie rolls lightly (optional but recommended).
  • Load the cheesy beef mixture into the rolls.
  • Serve immediately while hot and melty.

đź’ˇ Tips for best Philly cheesesteak

  • Ribeye is the gold standard for tenderness and flavor.
  • High heat = better sear and flavor.
  • Cheese choice changes the style:
    • Provolone → balanced and mild
    • American → extra creamy
    • Cheez Whiz → classic street-style Philly

🔥 Variations

  • Mushroom cheesesteak: add sautĂ©ed mushrooms
  • Spicy version: jalapeños + hot sauce
  • Chicken cheesesteak: swap beef for thin chicken strips

If you want, I can also show you a real Philadelphia street cart style version, a fast 10-minute home version, or a loaded cheesy “over-the-top” version.
