Homemade potato patties are a simple, crispy snack made from mashed potatoes mixed with spices and shallow-fried until golden. In South Asia, a very similar dish is known as Aloo Tikki.

Here’s an easy homemade version:

  • 3–4 medium potatoes (boiled and peeled)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped, optional)
  • 2 green chilies (finely chopped, optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh coriander (chopped)
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 2–3 tbsp cornflour or breadcrumbs (for binding)
  • Oil for shallow frying

  1. Boil & mash potatoes
    Boil until soft, then mash them well (no lumps).
  2. Mix ingredients
    Add onion, chilies, coriander, spices, salt, and cornflour. Mix until it forms a firm dough-like mixture.
  3. Shape patties
    Take small portions and flatten into round or oval patties.
  4. Heat oil
    Add a thin layer of oil in a pan over medium heat.
  5. Fry patties
    Cook each patty 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain & serve
    Place on paper towels to remove excess oil.
