🥔🧀 Cheesy Scalloped Potato Casserole

Ingredients:

  • 4–5 large potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 2 cups milk (or half milk + cream)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour (for sauce thickening)
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar works best)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 small onion (optional, finely sliced)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional, for flavor and color)

1. Make cheese sauce:

  • Melt butter in a pan.
  • Add garlic (and onion if using), cook briefly.
  • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  • Slowly whisk in milk until smooth and slightly thick.
  • Add salt, pepper, and half the cheese. Mix until melted.

2. Layer the potatoes:

  • Grease a baking dish.
  • Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes.
  • Pour some cheese sauce over it.
  • Repeat layers until everything is used.

3. Top layer:

  • Finish with remaining sauce and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.
  • Add paprika if desired.

4. Bake:

  • Cover with foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 40 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
