Salisbury steak—juicy seasoned beef patties smothered in rich onion mushroom gravy. It’s old-school comfort food that tastes like a steakhouse dinner at home.


🥩 Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

🧾 Ingredients

For the steaks:

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 small onion (finely grated or minced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp mustard (optional)

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion (sliced)
  • 1 cup mushrooms (sliced, optional but classic)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (or water + stock cube)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the patties

In a bowl, mix:

  • ground beef
  • onion, garlic
  • egg
  • breadcrumbs
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • salt, pepper, mustard

Shape into oval “steak-style” patties.


2. Brown the steaks

  • Heat a pan with a little oil
  • Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned
  • Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet)

3. Make the gravy

In the same pan:

  1. Add butter
  2. Sauté onions until soft and golden
  3. Add mushrooms (if using) and cook until browned
  4. Sprinkle flour and stir (forms a roux)
  5. Slowly add broth while stirring
  6. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper

Let it simmer until slightly thickened.


4. Finish cooking

  • Return patties to the gravy
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes
  • Spoon gravy over steaks while cooking
