Sleeping position can affect acid reflux and heartburn because it changes how easily stomach acid can move back up into the esophagus.
🧠 Why body position matters
Acid reflux happens when stomach acid flows upward into the esophagus. Gravity plays a big role in keeping it down.
So when you lie down, the angle of your stomach and esophagus becomes important.
⬅️ Sleeping on your LEFT side (recommended)
Doctors often suggest this position because:
- The stomach sits below the esophagus
- Gravity helps keep acid in the stomach
- The “valve” between stomach and esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter) stays above acid level
- Less chance of acid flowing upward
👉 Result: Less heartburn and fewer reflux symptoms
➡️ Sleeping on your RIGHT side (can worsen reflux)
This position can:
- Place the stomach above the esophagus
- Make it easier for acid to leak upward
- Increase nighttime heartburn symptoms in many people
👉 Result: More reflux in some individuals
🛌 Other helpful sleep tips for acid reflux
- Don’t lie down immediately after eating (wait 2–3 hours)
- Elevate your head slightly (10–20 cm)
- Avoid heavy, spicy, or oily meals at night
- Sleep on a slightly inclined surface if symptoms are strong
⚠️ Important note
Not everyone responds the same way, but left-side sleeping is consistently shown to reduce reflux in many studies.
