🍔🥩 Hamburger Steak with Gravy (Classic Comfort Food)

This is a juicy ground beef “steak” patty smothered in rich onion gravy—basically a budget-friendly, homestyle version of Salisbury steak.

🧾 Ingredients

🥩 Hamburger Steaks

  • 500g ground beef (preferably 15–20% fat for juiciness)
  • 1 small onion (finely grated or minced)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt

🍲 Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the patties

  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings.
  • Form into oval or round “steak-style” patties.

2. Brown the patties

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned.
  • Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

3. Cook onions

  • In the same pan, melt butter.
  • Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden (6–8 minutes).

4. Make the gravy

  • Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes.
  • Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer until slightly thickened.

5. Finish cooking

  • Return hamburger steaks to the pan.
  • Simmer in gravy for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.

🍽️ Serve

  • Serve hot with:
    • mashed potatoes 🥔
    • rice 🍚
    • buttered noodles 🍝
    • steamed vegetables 🥦

🔥 Tips

  • Don’t overmix the meat—keeps patties tender.
  • Let patties simmer in gravy so they absorb flavor.
  • Add mushrooms for an extra rich version.
