  • 6 cups day-old bread (cubed; white bread, brioche, or French bread)
  • 2–3 tbsp butter (for greasing or dotting on top)
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)

🥛 Custard

  • 2 cups milk (or half milk, half cream for richness)
  • 3 eggs
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prep the bread

  • Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
  • Grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Place cubed bread (and raisins if using) into the dish.

2. Make custard

  • Whisk eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.

3. Combine

  • Pour custard evenly over bread.
  • Press bread down lightly so it soaks up liquid.
  • Let sit 10–15 minutes.

4. Bake

  • Dot top with small pieces of butter.
  • Bake for 40–50 minutes until golden and set in the center.

5. Serve

  • Serve warm or slightly cooled.
  • Top with:
