🥔🍖 Potato Meatball Bake (Cheesy Oven Casserole)

This is a comforting baked dish with juicy meatballs, soft potatoes, and a rich tomato or creamy sauce—finished with melted cheese on top. Think of it as a mix between a meatball stew and a cheesy potato gratin.


🧾 Ingredients (4–6 servings)

Meatballs

  • 500g ground beef (or beef + lamb mix)
  • 1 small onion, finely grated or minced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika or chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano or Italian seasoning

Potatoes

  • 3–4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into wedges or chunks
  • 1–2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt & pepper

Sauce (choose one style)

Tomato version:

  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (400g)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

OR creamy version:

  • 1 cup cooking cream or heavy cream
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper

Topping

  • 1½–2 cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar
  • Optional: parsley for garnish

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare meatballs

  • Mix all meatball ingredients in a bowl.
  • Roll into small bite-sized balls.
  • Set aside.

2. Prep potatoes

  • Toss potato chunks with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  • (Optional: parboil for 5–7 minutes for softer texture.)

3. Pre-cook base (optional but recommended)

  • Lightly brown meatballs in a pan for 2–3 minutes per side.
    (Helps them hold shape and adds flavor.)

4. Assemble

  • Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F).
  • In a baking dish:
    • Add potatoes
    • Scatter meatballs on top
    • Pour sauce evenly over everything

5. Bake

  • Cover with foil and bake for 25–30 minutes.
  • Remove foil, sprinkle cheese on top.
  • Bake another 10–15 minutes until cheese is melted and golden.

6. Finish

  • Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving.
  • Sprinkle parsley if desired.
