layered pasta casserole

Posted on April 17, 2026 by Admin

A layered pasta casserole is basically a baked pasta “lasagna-style” dish without the strict rules—you layer pasta, sauce, meat, and cheese, then bake it into a bubbling, golden comfort meal.

Here’s a simple, reliable version:

🍝🧀 Layered Pasta Casserole

🧂 Ingredients

Pasta layer:

  • 400 g pasta (penne, rigatoni, or macaroni)
  • Salt for boiling water

Meat sauce:

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 250–300 g ground beef or chicken
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2–3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 can (400 g) tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste (optional, richer flavor)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp oregano or Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp chili flakes (optional)

Cream layer (optional but recommended):

  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour (to thicken slightly)
  • Pinch of salt

Cheese:

  • 1½–2 cups mozzarella
  • ½ cup cheddar or Parmesan

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Cook the pasta

  • Boil in salted water until just al dente
  • Drain and set aside (don’t overcook—it will bake later)

2. Make the meat sauce

  • Heat oil in a pan
  • Sauté onion until soft
  • Add garlic, cook 30 seconds
  • Add minced meat and brown well
  • Stir in tomato sauce, paste, and seasoning
  • Simmer 10–15 minutes until thick and rich

3. Make cream sauce (optional)

  • Melt butter in a small pan
  • Add flour, stir for 1 minute
  • Slowly add milk, whisking until slightly thickened
  • Season lightly with salt

4. Assemble layers

In a baking dish:

  1. Light layer of meat sauce
  2. Pasta layer
  3. Cream sauce (optional)
  4. Cheese
  5. Repeat layers until everything is used
  6. Finish with lots of cheese on top

5. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 180°C
  • Bake for 25–35 minutes
  • Top should be golden, bubbly, and slightly crisp at edges

🍽️ Serve it

  • Let it rest 5–10 minutes before slicing
  • Serve with garlic bread or salad

🌟 Tips

  • Slightly undercook pasta so it doesn’t get mushy
  • Thick sauce = better layering (watery sauce ruins structure)
  • Mix mozzarella + cheddar for stretch + flavor
  • Add veggies like mushrooms, capsicum, or spinach for variation

🔥 Variations

  • 🧀 Extra cheesy: add cream cheese between layers
  • 🌶️ Spicy version: add jalapeños or chili flakes
  • 🥓 Chicken & mushroom casserole: replace beef with chicken
  • 🍅 White sauce version: skip tomato, use only cream + cheese sauce

If you want, I can also make:

  • 🍝 A one-pot lazy casserole (no layering)
  • 🧀 A mac & cheese casserole bake version
  • 🍗 Or a desi-style pasta bake with tikka spices
