Mee Maw chocolate cake

Posted on April 17, 2026 by Admin

Mee Maw chocolate cake is a rich, old-fashioned Southern-style chocolate cake often made with simple pantry ingredients. It’s soft, moist, and usually topped with a warm chocolate frosting that soaks slightly into the cake for extra fudginess.

🧾 Ingredients

🍫 Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • ½ cup oil (or melted butter)
  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

🍫 Chocolate frosting

  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 2–3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

👩‍🍳 Method

1. Make the cake batter

  • Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  • Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla.
  • Stir until smooth.
  • Carefully mix in hot coffee/water (batter will be thin—this is normal).

2. Bake

  • Pour into a greased baking pan.
  • Bake at 175°C (350°F) for 30–40 minutes.
  • Check with a toothpick (it should come out mostly clean).

3. Make frosting

  • In a saucepan, melt butter and stir in cocoa and milk.
  • Bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat.
  • Whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.

4. Frost the cake

  • Pour warm frosting over the cake while it’s still slightly warm.
  • Let it set so it soaks in a little.

🍽️ Serving ideas

  • With vanilla ice cream 🍦
  • With whipped cream
  • With cold milk 🥛

💡 Tips

  • Hot coffee enhances chocolate flavor (doesn’t taste like coffee)
  • Frost while warm for that signature “soaked” texture
  • Don’t overbake or it can dry out

⚡ Quick 3-step version

  • Mix and bake chocolate cake
  • Make warm cocoa frosting
  • Pour and let set
